Sheikh Zayed, the Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque
Even though you might only visit Abu Dhabi for a short stay you really have to visit the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Zayed. It is the primary tourist attraction in the area and definitely worth a visit.
Even though you might only visit Abu Dhabi for a short stay you really have to visit the Grand Mosque. It is the primary tourist attraction in the area and definitely worth a visit. We were recommended to visit it at night around sunset to experience the special lighting instalments. This is highly advised as the whole Mosque is lit up and its colours and the marble stones all shine in a mystic way. It is a modern construction which was finished in 2007 but it still feels very traditional, perhaps because it is very much used today and on certain festivities fill up to its maximum capacity of 40 000 people!
As you can see from the picture below its splendour comes from a mix of white marble stone, golden ornaments and colourful stone decorations. In the main prayer hall you walk around barefoot on the world’s largest carpet hand wowen by 1200 people and took around 2 years to complete. You need to visit the Mosque covering your body and as a girl also your head, don’t worry if you have not brought that though, there is appropriate clothing to borrow at the entrance.
The Mosque is located in the city and you can take a taxi to get there from all the main hotel areas.
